A letter to my girls about true life and beauty

Girls, please read this letter whenever you’re in trouble. Read it aloud, over and over — together is best.

I want you both to know that it’s been a privilege to be your mother. The Lord of the universe entrusts me, out of all people, to carry the literal seed of each of your infinite potential in my womb. Watching the difference between you both thriving in the same soil is the evidence that God has sent you beauties to daddy and mommy as a gift. God’s favor is clearly upon us.

There are still so many layers of brilliance yet to be revealed inside each of you. As you are blossoming into your own self, daddy and mommy will always put God as our evergrowing source of empowerment and wisdom to raise you up, much like the sun gives light to the kingdom of our garden.

We may be able to enlighten you with everything you ask of us now, but one day you have to grow out of our place. Life on earth is not supposed to be an end-all-be-all. We were made for eternity. Therefore, toiling in the sun with the goal of fulfilling your own desires is the very description of death, a hellish vortex of emptiness, a trap of utter meaninglessness. There is no point in winning arguments or bets or beauty contests, is what I mean, that nothing you can do or work for in this world will amount to anything if you don’t understand this: Christ the Son is The One who loves you the most. He is The Point of it All, the one Person you need, the ultimate Meaning once you get out of all this undergrowth. No man will ever love you more than He — not daddy, not even mommy.

We are saying this because the responsibility is ours to educate you, not because we want to back out from this position of honor, or to quickly dismiss the shady days of your becoming. Quite the contrary. As I’ve said, we were made for eternity, and eternity is nothing but the most enduring qualities in yourselves that will still stand tall even when every whit of beauty has faded into dust. These things matter most and they look the same between you two, between all of us. We are all eternals in a sense.
